New look: Clean & Simple

Hello all, hope you are having a very scary halloween, I am: I’m doing DAS.

This post is about, if you haven’t guessed, the new theme of the site.

Since updating the CSS last time I have not been happy about how cluttered the site looked, I intended to change this to look cleaner whenever I got the chance. Since I am meant to be doing DAS it is the perfect time to do such a thing (also with an extra hour in the day today I had best put it to good use!).

So here is is. The initial “clean” looking chris-miller.org, there’s still some work to be done to make me happy but for now this will suffice.

Anyway this is just a quick post for that reason and to say whhhhoooooo (happy halloween).

The general design is clean, but at 800*600 (still the most common resolution by a long way) there are large vertical scroll-bars. Sort it!

Ok ok ok ok, I’ve added some javascript to the header of each page which will load a different stylesheet for systems running at under 1024px width.

This will load a stylesheet which displays things slightly differently with the content being fit into 750px and the text size being reduced to 80% overall (to combat the gigantisism which a resolution of 800×600 produces). Other than that, it should enable everyone (stupid enough to be running their machines at 800×600 or otherwise) to “enjoy” this site.

This better make you happy Gary!
(Note: you will have to set the system resolution not just resize the browser window)

Some of us work at 1024*768, but never run a browser window fullscreen. It’s just a habit of mine, that the browser occupies the leftmost 3/4 of the screen, leaving space for other guff (often IM windows), without too much overlap. That makes me the awkward user who still has to scroll left & right to see all of the page, despite the natty javascript addition… ;)

Ok Steve, I concur, I do the same thing especially when I am working on the PowerBook. The only thing I can say in rebate to that is that the content of a post or list of posts are available within the ~800px which your 3/4 screen would show.

I know this is a crap excuse, but it is one you will have to put up with until I fix it tomorrow afternoon.

UPDATE: I bit the bull by the horns (or something like that) and changed the template just now, that better?

    Ah, yes, much better :)
